Meetings (séances) are organised 2 to 3 times per year in Paris,or elsewhere in France. Lasting one or two days, they cover various themes:regional or national round-ups on recent discoveries and work, or syntheses on specific topics concerning a field of research or a particular period.

The meeting of the Société préhistorique française in October 2013 will take place in Besançon and proposes to address the two main currents that evidence the development of Magdalenian material culture in Western Europe following the Last Glacial Maximum (15,500-14,000 BP). The countries examined are France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany and Poland. These cultural currents, called "facies", were defined primarily on the basis of the bone tools, by the presence of specific artifacts that appear to be mutually exclusive: in one facies the navettes, probably tool handles, and in the other sagaie points of Lussac-Angles type. They are also distinguished by symbolic aspects, both parietal and in mobile art, in which the human representation seems to occupy a singularly important place. It is particularly in the "Lussac-Angles" facies that two major sites for graphic expression in the European Paleolithic are found: the Roc-aux-Sorciers with its monumental sculpted, painted and engraved frieze and La Marche with hundreds of engraved lithic supports.
This meeting was initiated by the research group directed by Geneviève Pinçon, responsible for the study of the decorated shelter of Roc-aux-Sorciers (Angles-sur-L’anglin, Vienne), one of the two reference sites for the "Lussac-Angles" facies. It follows a symposium devoted to the Magdalenian "à navettes" held in Argenton-sur-Creuse in 2004 (published by Despriée, Tymula and Rigaud in 2009), and this time aims to put into perspective these two facies that have been the focus of much research over the last ten years in the context of site studies and work at a regional scale. The multi- and interdisciplinary comparison of data resulting from techno-economic (lithic industry, bone industry) and symbolic (parietal art, mobile art, ornaments) domains should thus enable fleshing out of their respective diagnostic features, spatial distribution and chronological position. We hope in particular to reexamine the pertinence of their quite different areas of expansion. At present, the first, the facies "à navettes" extends from France to Poland, while the second is more localized in the departments of Vienne and Charente in France.



The meeting organized in 2013 will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of the visit to the Grotte Grappin (Jura) by members of the Société préhistorique française, one of the easternmost sites having yielded navettes and mobile art typical of this facies. An excursion is planned to the site and to the nearby château d'Arlay.

Die Tagung der Société préhistoriquefrançaise im Oktober 2013 wird in Besançon stattfinden. Thema sind die beidenHauptströmungen, die vom Aufschwung des Magdaléniens am Ende der letztenEiszeit (15.500 – 14.000 BP) in Westeuropa zeugen. Hauptsächlich betroffen sindFrankreich, Spanien, die Schweiz, Deutschland und Polen. Diese kulturellen Strömungen,Fazies genannt, wurden im Wesentlichen anhand ihrer aus Geweih hergestelltenGeräte definiert, genauer gesagt durch das Vorkommen bestimmter Artefakte, diesich gegenseitig auszuschließen scheinen: einerseits die Navettes, potentielleWerkzeugschäfte, und andererseits die Speerspitzen vom Typ Lussac-Angles. Sie zeichnensich auch durch ihre symbolischen Erzeugnisse – Höhlen- und Kleinkunst – aus, unterdenen die Darstellung des Menschen einen besonders wichtigen Platz einzunehmenscheint. Insbesondere der Fazies „Lussac-Angles“gehören zwei der wichtigsten Fundplätze, die das grafische Schaffen im europäischenPaläolithikum zum Ausdruck bringen, an: Roc-aux-Sorciers mit seinemmonumentalen Fries in Relieftechnik, das auch Malerei und Gravierung aufweist,sowie La Marche mit ihren Hunderten von Steinplatten mit Gravierung.


Diese Tagunggeht auf die Initiative der von Geneviève Pinçon geleiteten Forschergruppezurück, die mit der Untersuchung des durch Felskunst ausgezeichneten AbrisRoc-aux-Sorciers (Angles-sur-l’Anglin, Vienne) betraut ist, eines der beiden Referenzfundplätzeder Fazies „Lussac-Angles“. Sie bildet die Fortsetzung des Kolloquiums zum „Magdalénienà navettes“, das 2004 in Argenton-sur-Creuse stattfand (publiziert vonDespriée, Tymula und Rigaud 2009), und hat diesmal zum Ziel, diese beidenFazies, die seit rund zehn Jahren in Form von einzelnen Fundplatzuntersuchungenoder Regionalstudien intensiv erforscht werden, in einen größeren Kontext zustellen. Der multi- und interdisziplinäre Vergleich von Daten aus dertechnisch-ökonomischen (Stein-, Knochen- und Geweihartefakte) und dersymbolischen (Höhlen- und Kleinkunst, Schmuck) Sphäre soll es jeweilsermöglichen, ihre diagnostischen Elemente, ihre räumliche Verbreitung und ihrezeitliche Position herauszuarbeiten. Wir möchten insbesondere die Richtigkeitihrer sehr unterschiedlichen Verbreitungsgebiete überprüfen. Dem aktuellenForschungsstand nach erstreckt sich die Fazies „à navettes“ von Frankreich bisPolen, während die zweite Fazies auf die Vienne und die Charente beschränktbliebe.


Diese 2013 stattfindende Tagung wirdzum Anlass genommen werden, um den 100. Jahrestag des Besuchs der GrotteGrappin (Jura) durch die Mitglieder der Société préhistorique française zubegehen. Es handelt sich um einen der am weitesten östlich gelegenen Fundplätzemit Navettes, der auch eine für diese Fazies typische Kleinkunst zutage brachte.Ein Ausflug zum Fundplatz und dem nahe gelegenen Schloss von Arlay istvorgesehen.
