The 2016 International Obsidian Conference is open to presentations and discussion of a variety of themes related to obsidian studies worldwide, including archaeology, geology, archaeometry, and anthropology.
 

Obsidian and its broader implications for regions around the world will be the focus of this meeting.

 

Three keynote speakers:
- Akira Ono (Center for Obsidian and Lithic Studies, Meiji University, Tokyo, Japan)
Impact of obsidian source studies on archaeology: a view from Japanese Islands
- Michael D. Glascock (Archaeometry Laboratory, Research Reactor Research Center, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, USA)::
Reflections on the contributions of obsidian characterization to archaeological research: analytical methods and approaches
- Clive Oppenheimer (Department of Geography, Cambridge University, Cambridge, UK)
Eruptive history and human exploitation of Nabro volcano, Eritrea

 

An organized excursion to the obsidian sources on Lipari is being arranged. Obsidian may be found along the Canneto beach area, up to Acquacalda on the northern coast, as well as in certain inland locations (Gabellotto Gorge, Canneto Dentro).  Pumice has been extensively quarried and exported.
