The virtual exhibition, created by Istituto Italiano di Preistoria e Protostoria, is structured as a journey back in time, starting from the excavations that have revealed a specific ecological niche created by the presence of thermal waters, where humans and animals found refuge in a period of climate crisis.

From here we enter the "cemetery" of the ancient elephants who died of hunger, an unexpected bounty for the groups of Neanderthals that moved around this area of modern-day Tuscan Maremma.

Man took up the challenge of change: a new technology is documented in Poggetti Vecchi that was to become essential for human evolution. For the first time, fire was used as a tool to work even the hardest woods: this is how the digging sticks found in the excavation were made: a unique discovery in Italy. The key word here is "adaptation" to the environment.

The exhibition includes numerous illustrations by Tom Björklund, an artist who is particularly dedicated to reconstructing prehistoric environments and men, making visible what is otherwise only possible to imagine.

Take a walk on the virtual side of Neanderthal, learn, and share!
